Hollyhock House is named for Barnsdall’s favorite flower – the hollyhock. Wright created stylized representations of the hollyhock plant throughout the house, which include the ornamental art stone, textiles, furniture, and striking art glass. In 2012, Hollyhock House underwent an extensive restoration of the public rooms, which reopened to visitors in 2015. Hollyhock House is the only Frank Lloyd Wright residence in Los Angeles open to the public. In 1927, Barnsdall gave Hollyhock House, 12 acres, and the Residence A guest house to the City of Los Angeles.

Wright's abstracted hollyhock patterns were incorporated into the decoration motif on and in the residence. "It's a fabulous, exotic and quirky house - not a conventional home in the least," said Hollyhock House Curator Emeritus Jeffrey Herr at the reopening.

This, however, is less a change in Wright’s theoretical position than it is his attempt to design an architecture native to the southwest region. As appropriate as the prairie houses were to the Midwest, so too was the hilltop house to California. “Any house,” he wrote, “should be beautiful in California in the way that California herself is beautiful.” Wright’s attempts at developing the appropriate language for Southern California can be seen in his early elevation sketches of the house. Her daughter called her a “female Don Quixote, always jousting at windmills.” In 1919, she bought 36-acres on Olive Hill, in the lovely hamlet of Los Feliz.
Wright described the formal language as “California Romanza,” a musical term he appropriated to describe the freedom with which an artist composed form. Although the building was designed to be made from poured concrete, due to financial concerns it was constructed of common hollow clay tile, wood framing, and plaster. In 1915, Aline Barnsdall, an oil heiress, first approached Frank Lloyd Wright not to build a house but a theater. A passionate supporter of the arts, she was a stage producer—earning critical acclaim for her avante-garde productions for children and adults alike in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles (while awaiting a Wright-designed theater that never came). In 1919, she purchased Olive Hill, a 36-acre mount on Hollywood’s eastern edge and far north of downtown Los Angeles. With the site secured, the commission grew to include plans for the theater, a cinema, artist residences, commercial shops, two guest houses, and a residence for Barnsdall.

A limited number of tours of the interior of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House will be offered; tickets sold separately. Hollyhock House reopened to the public in February 2015, and the meticulous project earned a 2015 Conservancy Preservation Award. This project was a major achievement for the City of Los Angeles, as well as clear evidence of the value of civic investment in historic places. Hollyhock House was Frank Lloyd Wright’s first Los Angeles commission and an ode to California’s freedom and natural beauty. Built between 1919 and 1921 for Aline Barnsdall, the house introduced young architects Rudolph Schindler and Richard Neutra to Los Angeles. Visitors may park along the perimeter road that loops that upper part of the park. Additionally, parking is located directly to the left from the main park entrance on Hollywood Boulevard. Please use the stairs on the east end to make your way to the top of the hill. With funding for the Masterplan and site reconstruction coming from the 6 years-long construction of the Metrorail subway line (which goes under the northerly edge of the Park) the landscape was reconstructed and restored.

Lone and Søren Asmusson moved into Posehuset Studio, their country estate outside of Copenhagen, only a few years ago, intending to use the space as a home-cum-art studio.
You can visit the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery to truly get a taste of local talent, as nearly all the art exhibited is by Angelenos, often from communities that are underrepresented in the art world. Founded in 1954, it is actually one of the longest-operating art galleries in the city. For Hollyhock House, Barnsdall asked Wright to incorporate her favorite flower, the hollyhock, into the home’s design. The motif can be seen in cast stonework, art glass, furniture and textiles. Barnsdall’s request for a residence that was half house and half garden inspired the numerous terraces, colonnades and pergolas that join the Hollyhock House’s interior and exterior spaces. A series of rooftop terraces takes advantage of the temperate climate, providing magnificent views of the Los Angeles basin and the Hollywood Hills. Stylized hollyhocks, Barnsdall’s favorite flower, appear on roof finials, furniture, art glass windows, and the ornamental bands of cast-concrete on the structure’s exterior. With seventeen rooms and seven bathrooms, the massive residence was ultimately not what Barnsdall wanted.
In 2004, in association with the City's Department of Cultural Affairs, the ISC established a residency in Barnsdall Art Park. In October 2004, the ISC toured Richard III in France as part of the 100th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale. This production returned to Los Angeles as part of Free Shakespeare in Barnsdall Art Park 2005, performed in rotation with The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Hamlet. In 2005, the ISC returned to Barnsdall Art Park with a new production of Hamlet, running in repertory with Richard III and encore performances of The Two Gentlemen of Verona. In subsequent decades, the park has become popular among residents from the nearby districts. The park has a wide variety of park visitors, as it sits at the intersection of a number of Los Angeles demographic groups.
